| Hey Logman! We're are preparing to buy a log home in which the previous owner has covered the exposed log ceiling joists with a white oil based paint in the living room and kitchen. I've been told that stripping this paint will be nearly impossible. Is there a way to do it, or is there a paint or stain that we could use to cover the white paint and return to a natural log look? Thanks for your time and consideration. |

| 3 | General Loghome Issues / Ask The Logman / carpenter ants/wet wood on: Oct 21st, 2007, 8:50am |

| I live in a log home that was built in the 80's. Recently, I had an exterminator come to my house for an estimate and that was when we noticed a moist log. In this moist log was evidence of carpenter ants. The carpenter ants can be taken care of but what about the moist log? This log is so wet that you can actually peel away pieces of wood. The log is just above an outside deck so I guess that when it rains the rain can bounce off the deck onto the log. Yesterday I noticed there was another log going bad. This log is not directly on top of the other log already mentioned. This log is located this way: the log mentioned above, then a good log, and then another moist log. Any suggestions? I live in Sullivan County, New York. | |

| I am thinking of buying a existing log home in Kansas, but there is log rot damage on one end of the house. I believe the house was built in 1983 and is in otherwise in good condition. My questions are: how can the water damage be fixed, how long would it take (there are approximately 5-6 logs {6X8" D shaped} and approx 20ft in length with two windows set evenly spaced on one end of the house that have rotting, and i'm un-sure as to how deep the wood is rotted except that the logs sound solid when tap tested from inside the house), a ballpark on what kind of money it would cost, and most importantly....who could I get to do something like this in this area? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated Thanks in Advance, Mike |

| I have a 10 year old hand hewn log cabin. In spite of applying Sikkins in the second year as directed I have gotten extensive rot on the top and bottom logs on the end with the greatest exposure. I spent 10,000 on repairs and application of three coats of Sikkins penetrating stain. I still note cracks in the pigmented stain from wood movement leaving entry points of moisture. It occurred to me that there is no way to prevent these cracks since wood moves. Would I be wise or stupid to bi-annually apply a coat of boric or Glycol solution (as recommended) when these cracks appear? It seems like this would soak in and kill the problems that are causing the rot. If I applied this in dry weather would it contribute to moisture.? I am not sure any sealer can fully seal the logs. | |

| Any log structure can be repaired. It all depends on how much time and or money you want to invest in the project. In other words, is it worth it to you to repair this cabin ?Do you love it enought to see it through. ... Jim Bilyeu ... Loghomerepair@yahoo.com |

| Hello, I am new to this board. I have found a log cabin in the woods. The cabin appears to have been deserted for a while. I am trying to decide weather the cabin can be repaired. The cabin seems to have a sturdy roof from what I can see from the ground. What the problem is the cabin is on brick supports and it has a crawl space below of about 2ft. The bricks on one side of the cabin have crumbled and the living room has fallen the two foot. The joists that hold the living room floor up have fallen. The cabin will need new joist, floor, supports and perhaps a new log where the bottom log hit the ground . Where the living room connects to the kitchen appear to be two different sections. The kitchen appears ok. Do you know if if is possible to jack up log houses to repair the damages to the bottom. My husband wants me to scrap the whole idea. I think repair is possible. I could get pictures if you need them. |

| I enjoyed speaking with you today. In order to give you a more accurate "quick quote", we will need for you to send pictures and detailed measurements. I noticed in this post you only told us the size of the house, can you provide wall lengths as well? I remember you mentioned that the height of some walls were 7 feet and gables are 10 feet. David would still need to see pictures. But like I said on the telephone, I recommend that you hire us to do an onsite evaluation, that way you get a detailed and more accurate quote.
