 Restoring Painted Log Ceiling Joists

Hey Logman!
We're are preparing to buy a log home in which the previous owner has covered the exposed log ceiling joists with a white oil based paint in the living room and kitchen.
I've been told that stripping this paint will be nearly impossible. Is there a way to do it, or is there a paint or stain that we could use to cover the white paint and return to a natural log look?
